Pilates began experimenting with improvised fitness equipment using bed springs attached to walls above beds – this would later evolve into the Cadillac.

In 1926 Joseph Pilates set sail to the US. On board he met a young woman, Clara who was later to become his wife. Once in New York they set up a studio and by the 1940’s the Pilates technique enjoyed tremendous popularity, particularly in the performance world. Dancers, actors, athletes and gymnasts alike were drawn to his studio. By the 1960’s many of New York ’s top dancers such as George Balanchine, dancers from the Martha Graham Company and New York City Ballet were regular clients.
